Are We Living the Same Life Over and Over Again

Would You Live Your Same Life Over Once again?

Among other things, the German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was known for an outrageous mustache that frightened abroad potential soulmates. He too said a lot of outrageous things, which caused him to be shunned by much of society at the time.

Earlier publishingThus Spoke Zarathustra, his best known work in which he proclaimed "God is expressionless," he wrote a book titledThe Joyful Wisdom (originally:The Gay Science).

In that volume, he posed a question that may be fifty-fifty more than interesting than the death of God. Well over one-hundred years later on, this question is then provocative that information technology tin can notwithstanding cause you to lose slumber … or peradventure that's just me.

Nietzsche's question was: "What if I had to live this life over again—would I be able to stand it?"

"What if some day or dark a demon were to steal later on you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it,y'all will accept to live once again and innumerable times more; and there will be zippo new in it, but every hurting and every joy and every thought and sigh andeverything unutterably pocket-sized or great in your life volition have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence – even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and fifty-fifty this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down over again and again, and you with information technology, speck of dust!'"

I think of this equally a long way of asking, "Would you willingly cull to relive the life yous've lived in its entirety, or would you lot be so tormented with regret that you'd rather have annihilation else?"

If yous've never sat with this question, it can be quite an experience. Many people go to great lengths to avert thinking about their lives, for all sorts of reasons. Thinking nigh your life can be a brunt! You've got plenty of other things to do, and besides, where practise y'all even start?

Moreover, you might have a sneaking suspicion that yous already know your answer to the question, and it doesn't experience great. Would you like to live exactly the same life over once more? No! You'd do many things differently. Regret is a byproduct of being man.

That'south not the question, though. The question is, "If you HAD to feel it however fashion, how would you feel?" There are three possible answers:

1. You'd feel exuberant. You've washed everything correct! Congratulations, enlightened soul.

2. Y'all'd feel tormented with regret.Everything is meaningless.

3. Yous'd think, wow, that'southward interesting. I would definitely relive some parts of my life, and others I might want to change. I wonder if this insight might cause me to modify somethingat present?

In case you feel tormented: information technology's okay, I get it. I used to feel that fashion more than the other answers. Twenty-four hours after day, I felt trapped, scared, and upset with myself. But something changed …specifically, I did.

Though I hesitate to use the unconditional past tense—information technology's more than of an ongoing practice than a one-and-done decision—I tin say with confidence that I WOULD live my same life over once more at present. I yet have more to work on (etc. etc.) but I no longer experiencetormented.

That's why, while it's probably nice to feel exuberant with the cognition that yous wouldn't modify anything at all, I think the tertiary respond is the best.

All of us nevertheless have piece of work to do on ourselves—to live better, to dearest and experience more, to brand the nigh of the time we take left. Better to know that than to bury your head in the sand. And improve still to be willing to do the work.

The manner to transform this sense of despair is to understand its logical conclusion: not to cause you to be tormented with regret, but to assist y'all change the future.

Effort to change it right at present!
